The novel “big mouth & ugly girl”, written by Joyce Carol Oates is about Matt Donaghy – big mouth – Ursula Riggs – ugly girl.Matt gets in trouble, because of his big mouth. He says he want to blow up the school and massacre many students and teachers, but it was only a joke. The accusation of the school, the students, the police and the media make him a bad time. His friends turns away from him and only Ursula has the courage to be a witness for Matt and tells the truth. In the course of time Matt and Ursula get closer and become best friends.I think the story is well written and you want to know how it goes on. That feeling you get already in the first chapter, when Matt have to come out with the detectives and you don't know if he did something bad.Already in the beginning you get to know both characters very well, it is written in two perspectives. For example in one chapter out of Ursula's perspective and in the following out of Matt's perspective.Maybe it becomes to some readers in a short time very boring because of too much explanation of the circumstances and the characteristics.Later the two perspectives become to only one. That depends on how close their relationship is to that time.In my opinion the characters are chosen very well. They are described very well and you only have to like Ursula and Matt. For me the topic is very interesting and I think that many other people are interested in that topic because it is still present. I would say boys as well as girls like the topic and would read the book. The only thing I would criticize is that the tension gets a little bit lost in the end and the end is foreseeable. But what I like about the end is that it is a happy end because I don't like books without happy end.I would recommend the book to others because all in all it is an interesting story with a serious and present topic. It is well written and the spelling style of Joyce Carol Oates is very easy and sometimes funny.

First I read the book in school and it was good to read sometimes also funny. I liked the plot set up, but the introspection about the two characters was used to much and the plot evolution became too predictable by the end, and not in a good way. It is ok to read and you can spend a few hours reading it. A good but obvious romantic book.

Absolute Kaufempfehlung!
